Crafting the Vuori Flagship Store Experience: A Fusion of Design, Culture, and Innovation

Vuori, a brand that perfectly represents the active and vibrant lifestyle of Coastal California, has taken a bold step with one of its newer flagship stores, we had so much fun bringing this vision to life! Let's explore how the design of Vuori's Century City flagship store makes it an elevated space both Vuori and Erin Morris are proud to present and elaborate on the creativity and strategic planning behind this dynamic location.

Design Concept and Collaboration

The architectural design of Vuori's flagship store in Century City incorporates richer details and textures than typically observed in their other stores. The design features a series of curved and arched elements, which guide visitors through the store, encouraging them to explore and interact with the space.

These design choices mirror Vuori's brand values, which celebrate the fluid and lively nature of Coastal California life. The successful realization of this concept was largely due to the close collaboration between Erin Morris and Vuori.

The close-knit team integrated distinctive architectural elements such as arched doorways and made extensive use of textured materials, including wood tambour, artisan plaster, and Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC). These materials do more than just enhance the store's visual appeal—they enrich the overall atmosphere, making the store a warm and welcoming space for customers.

Challenges and Solutions

With all that said, the journey to complete this store was not without obstacles. A significant challenge faced by the teams from Erin Morris and Vuori involved designing effective lighting solutions for the store's uniquely curved structures.

Lighting is such an important part of retail design. Together with assistance from the construction team, they devised lighting and construction solutions that effectively illuminated the curves, preserved the integrity of the design, and improved the overall visual appeal for visitors.

Sustainability and Material Innovation

In the store's construction, natural materials like wood were given priority for their aesthetic appeal and warm ambiance, perfectly aligning with Vuori's brand values. This natural look and feel of the final store strikes a chord with environmentally conscious consumers.

The use of fluted GFRC panels on the exterior of the building marked a new direction for Vuori's design approach, offering a fresh aesthetic for the brand. While not an entirely novel material, its application in this context posed logistical challenges, particularly during transportation through the mall's loading dock. Additionally, considerations for the panels' weight necessitated careful planning in their installation and joint design. This underscores the importance of holistic design thinking, where factors beyond aesthetics, such as constructability, are carefully considered.

Collaboration with Local Craftsmen

An essential aspect of the store’s design was the collaboration with local craftsmen, particularly the work done with Platt Stone from Los Angeles. This partnership ensured that the custom elements, like the GFRC panels, were not only of high quality but also locally sourced, supporting community businesses and reducing the project's carbon footprint. This collaboration is a testament to the importance of integrating local artistry into major projects, which adds a layer of authenticity and community engagement to the retail experience.
